A Cautionary Tale
For almost three decades, Georgia Tann was nationally lauded for her work at her orphanage in Memphis, Tennessee. In reality, she managed to kidnap and sell 5,000 babies on the black market to wealthy clients nationwide.
Most of these children were kidnapped from poor families or single mothers, as they didn’t have the resources to retaliate. As for those who reported the kidnappings, they were ignored.
Eventually, demand for her services grew so high that Georgian Tann began using pressure tactics, extortion, and threats of legal action against parents who didn’t know any better.
She also picked up newborns in prisons and mental wards. Even those born in hospitals weren’t safe, as doctors and nurses were frequently bribed to snatch the babies. The accomplices would then tell parents that their babies were stillborn.
